Welcome prep sports enthusiasts!

At Deseret Media Companies, we believe in catching kids doing great things. Our commitment to prep sports coverage is unparalleled, but it's not enough. We want to do more for our young student athletes around the state.

We aim to cover many more of these young athletes in their contests around the state. You can help. We are recruiting students, parents, and other enthusiasts who attend high school games to submit stories regularly through Deseret Connect, where they will then be edited, and published on deseretnews.com and/or ksl.com. Many will be printed in the Deseret News.

It's easy to get started. Simply do the following:

  1. Register for your personal account at DeseretConnect.com and sign in.
  2. Review "Writing for Prep Sports" under the "Improve Skills" tab. Here you'll learn more about writing and photographing prep sports
  3. Under the "Groups" tab, sign up for a regional group associated with your school-of-interest. For example, if you want to cover Alta Hawks basketball, sign up for Region 4.
  4. Submit your story in one of two ways: One, accept an editor-assigned story, to cover a particular game, as listed in your group; or, two, submit your own story on a game or athlete of your choosing.

Some things you might be thinking:

But I've never written for a newspaper!

Don't worry, we have a tutorial to guide you and copy editors who can help you improve. Remember, if you don't cover the game, who will?

How does the system work?

Can I cover more than one team?

If you can cover more than one game in a night, you're welcome to, but only accept or propose story assignments you can fulfill. We're counting on the stories and so are the student athletes (and their moms!).

How will people find my article?

High school sports is one of the most popular sections on the Deseret News website, where people go to check scores and stories. Once readers from your region get wind there is a story online about their team, they'll visit. The more often stories appear, the more often readers will return. You can also promote the story through your social network like Facebook or Twitter.

Will my article appear in print?

Sometime it may. It really depends upon how quickly you get us the story and the amount of space available in the newspaper on a given night. The better the story, the more timely, the more likely it will make it to print.

Shall I tell my friends about this?

Absolutely. We're looking for many individuals who attend high school games and activities around the state to jump in and start getting published.

Are you only interested in high school sports?

As you'll note on the main website, we are looking for stories across many topic areas. We'd be thrilled to publish stories about high school activities in addition to sports. For instance, if your choir recently made it to a regional competition, our readers and your neighbors, and those choir members, would love to hear about it in the news.
